– Elana & the Sage Team
About Elana...
Elana was born in Santa Cruz and has spent most of her life in the local area. She holds a PhD in Cultural Geography, where her research focused on travel narratives, testimonials, spatial theory, and sociocultural production among political exiles.
The idea for Sage began during Elana’s doctoral journey in 2015, when she found herself facing an intense bout of writer’s block with roughly 100 pages of her dissertation still to complete. The stress quickly became overwhelming, affecting her sleep and leaving her unsure whether she would be able to finish. After hearing about floating on Joe Rogan’s podcast, she decided to give it a try. Over time, additional services were added to Sage based on customer requests, staying true to one of Elana’s core business mottos: “Give the people what they want.”
Elana continues to use Sage’s services regularly as part of her own recovery and wellness routine. Floating remains especially important to her, with 2 hours and 30 minutes being her personal sweet spot for reaching a deeper level of relaxation and mental clarity. Infrared sauna, cold plunge, and massage are also part of her regular routine, with hot stone and cupping among her favorite massage techniques for relaxation and recovery.
Outside of Sage, Elana is drawn to travel and exploration, particularly in high-elevation mountain regions. Some of her favorite destinations include the Swiss Alps, Mount Shasta, Alaska, and the Canadian Rockies. She also enjoys hiking, cooking, gardening, stained glass, home projects, and maintaining an active lifestyle through CrossFit.
She lives in Scotts Valley with her two German Shepherds, Fable and Shale, who often accompany her on her adventures and sometimes make guest appearances at Sage.
Why Sage?
The word "sage" carries rich layers of meaning, encompassing both nature and wisdom. Known as a sacred, cleansing, and protective plant, sage has been revered for centuries as a symbol of purification and renewal. Additionally, the term has been used by philosophers and spiritualists to represent individuals who have achieved profound states of insight and knowledge.
Sage was chosen because it embodies the harmonious connection between nature and wisdom. This connection serves as a reminder to align with our natural selves and draw upon our innate ability to heal, regenerate, and grow. When we embrace this balance, we create space for true healing, inspiration, and exploration.
